What’s a book you never finished but still think about?
I was thrifted shopping at my favorite local spot about 7 years ago. My belly was stretched to an enormous size and I walked with a slight waddle. I casually walked through the tight isles recalling other times I have visited. Different seasons ran through my mind somehow tucked silently amogst the books. A quiet memory only I can see.
Soon a book caught my eye. It featured a butterfly on the cover, a creature that has always been in my top favorites. I read the back hastily, knowing if I like the cover I am likely to get it regardless.
“A man by the name of Henri Charrière, nicknamed “Papillon is wrongfully convicted and his thoughts turn to one thing, escape.”
The plot intrigued me despite the heaviness it implied, although no where near what I assumed it would be. I brought it home and set it on my shelf, happy with my choice.
While on maternity leave I grabbed the book hoping to give it a good read and return it to its rightful place. It would seem that the story line did not fit the current mood. I suppose I was looking for something more casual at the time. So, I returned it to my collection and choose another. And there it waits for another time and another place. A different mood or rather, a different season.
I think about it from time to time, remembering how it became mine and the tiny sweet memory it still holds. One day I will return and learn all about Papillon and his great escape. Until then, it patiently waits for my return.
