There was a young girl who had more time than she knew what to do.
What she was to become she didn’t have a clue.
Her day began around noon,
softly humming her favorite tune.
Not even bothering to put on shoes,
what’s the point? She had nothing to do.
One hobby after the next, like a kangaroo,
enjoying life as a young rue.
She watched TV alongside the moon,
munching on her favorite take-out food.
Her schedule wide open until sometime after June,
or so she thought that afternoon.
Who knew all that would soon
be replaced with something new?
The next day, her life took an unexpected turn,
one in which she would have a lot to learn.
You see, she met a man downtown,
unlike any man that she had ever found.
He was charming, cute, and morally sound.
Who knew he had the power to turn her world upside down?
It started out small, a few late nights on the town.
Little did she know the treasure she had found.
Days turned into weeks and weeks into years.
Years turned into promises bound, standing at the altar in her mother’s gown.
After the ceremony came the key,
a house, a role, and hopes of a family.
Her days now filled with wifely duties,
each day she delighted in all they would be.
Then came the announcement of the baby to be.
Before she knew it, he was here for all to see.
Her days soon became filled with caring for his needs.
Around the clock feedings and diaper changes too.
The house needs cleaning and the bills are due.
From time to time she stares into the rearview,
recalling the life she once knew.
The memories, her mind silently drew,
unable to recall the last time she slept till noon.
Now she has the pitter-patter of little feet to pursue.
Often hitting her early morning alarm instead of snooze,
her shoes worn daily just like the evening news.
Home-cooked meals on the table instead of take-out food,
these days she hums to a different tune.
A melody entangled with her husband and son too,
creating a song like no other, each day something new,
dictated only by love that is no doubt true.
Oh, how empty her life was,
when she had nothing to do.
More Time Than She Knew What to Do.
