If I could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?
This is a difficult question to answer. The English language is unique and very descriptive in nature. If one word was to be eliminated, similar words with the same connotation would still exist. Therefore, it would be pointless.
We use words to bring clarity to vast concepts. If we can not define it, the level of mastery declines, making each and every word important. In able to eliminate a word, we would have to eliminate a whole concept. When we eliminate concepts we hinder progress.
Words are crucial to society, they hold an unseen weight that can not be measured. Yet, only the writer decides how much weight each one holds, the rest is left to interpretation.
I don’t think a single word should be banned. To ban a word would also ban the understanding and responsibility which comes with the word. To ban knowledge is more hurtful than the power of of a single word.
